On-page SEO checklist for a Singapore small business website: 15 checks

A plain-English on-page SEO checklist for Singapore small business websites: titles, descriptions, headings, content and links, with a free worksheet.

On-page SEO means making each page on your own website clear to people and to Google: what the page is about, who it is for, and what to do next. For a small business site with five to ten pages, you can check all of it in about an hour, with no special tools. This checklist gives you 15 checks, a worksheet you can copy, and examples for Singapore businesses.

One honest note first: good on-page SEO makes it possible for your pages to rank. It does not guarantee a position, and a brand-new site still needs time. Treat this as the foundation, not a shortcut.

What Google says about content and titles

You do not need to guess at the basics, because Google publishes them. Three points from Google Search Central shape this whole checklist:

  • Titles should be unique, clear and descriptive. Google builds the title shown in search results from your page's title element and other headings. A good title is unique to the page, concise, and accurately describes the page.
  • Meta descriptions are short summaries. Google may use the meta description as the snippet in results. A good one is short, unique to one page, and includes the most relevant points. It works like a pitch to the person searching.
  • People-first content wins. Google says to create content that is helpful and reliable for people, not content made mainly to rank. Its self-assessment questions ask whether your page offers original information, shows clear sourcing, and leaves the reader satisfied.

Everything below is a practical way to apply those three ideas.

The checklist

Titles and descriptions

  1. One main topic per page. Decide what the page is for before you touch the wording. "Hair colouring prices" and "About us" are different pages. If a page tries to cover everything, split it.
  2. A unique, descriptive title for every page. Include the service and place people would search, and your business name at the end. A rule of thumb we use (this is our habit, not a Google rule) is to keep titles under about 60 characters so they are less likely to be cut off.
  3. A unique meta description for every page. One or two sentences, with the main point and a reason to click. Never reuse the same description across pages.
  4. No keyword stuffing. "Cafe Singapore best cafe cheap cafe Tampines cafe" helps nobody. Write it the way you would say it to a customer.
  5. Check the result in Google. Search for your business name and see how your title and description look. Edit the ones that look cut off or vague.

Headings and content

  1. One H1 per page. It should say what the page is, in plain words. "Hair salon in Tampines" beats "Welcome".
  2. Headings that help readers scan. Use H2s for sections like prices, how it works and FAQs. Google's guidance says heading order does not matter for Search, but screen readers and busy readers rely on a clear structure, so keep it tidy.
  3. Answer the main question in the first paragraph. Say what you offer, where, and for whom. A visitor from Google should know within five seconds they are in the right place.
  4. Add what only you can add. Real prices, your process, photos of your own work (without identifying customers), turnaround times and honest limits. This is the part competitors cannot copy.
  5. Add three to five real FAQs. Use the questions customers actually ask you on WhatsApp. Answer in one to three sentences each.
  1. Link your own pages together. From a blog post to the service page, and from the service page back to related guides, using descriptive link text such as "social media management in Singapore" instead of "click here".
  2. Cite your sources. When you quote a statistic, rule or price, link to the original source. It helps readers trust you, and Google's guidance asks for clear sourcing.
  3. Describe your images. Write short alt text that says what the picture shows. Keep file sizes small so pages load quickly on mobile data.
  4. Show the same business details everywhere. Your name, phone number and area should match across your website, Google Business Profile and social pages. See our guide to setting up a Google Business Profile if you do not have one yet.
  5. Check how it looks on a phone. Most of your customers will visit on mobile. Open each key page on your phone and ask: can I read it, find the price, and contact the business in two taps?

A worksheet you can copy

Fill this in for each page. A five-page site fits on one sheet.

Page Main topic Title (about 60 characters) Meta description H1 Links to
Home What you do and where Service pages
Service page One service Related guide, contact
Prices Packages and fees Service page
About Who you are Services
Contact How to reach you Home

Example: a weak page and a better one

These are made-up examples to show the idea, not real businesses.

Weak: Title "Home". H1 "Welcome to our website". Description left empty, so Google picks random text from the page.

Better: Title "Hair Salon in Tampines: Cuts, Colour and Treatments". H1 "Hair salon in Tampines". Description "Walk-ins and bookings at our Tampines salon. See prices for cuts, colour and treatments, and book on WhatsApp."

Notice that the better version tells a stranger the service, the place and the next step, in plain English. That is all on-page SEO is trying to do.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • The same title on every page. Many website builders default to this. Change it.
  • Text inside images. Search engines may not read the words in a flyer image reliably, and screen readers cannot read them at all. Put the text on the page too.
  • Hiding prices. If customers cannot find the price, many will leave. Even "from" prices help.
  • Writing for Google instead of people. If a sentence sounds odd when read aloud, rewrite it.
  • Forgetting to update. Old hours, old prices and dead links hurt trust. Review your key pages every three months.

How long until it shows?

On-page fixes can be crawled within days or weeks, but ranking changes depend on competition, your site's age and how helpful your pages are compared with others. We cannot promise a timeline, and nobody honestly can. A good habit is to check Google Search Console once a month to see which searches your pages appear for, then improve the pages that get impressions but few clicks.

Frequently asked questions

Does the meta description help me rank higher?

Google says it may use your meta description as the snippet under your title in search results. Treat it as a short pitch that earns the click, not as a ranking trick. Write a unique one for every page.

Do my headings have to be in a strict order?

Not for Google. Its documentation says it does not matter for Search if headings are out of order, but a sensible order still helps screen readers and human readers. We keep one H1 per page and use H2 and H3 in order.

How often should I update my pages?

Check your key pages every three months, or whenever prices, hours or services change. Wrong information on a page is worse than an old design.
