If your budget is small, start with the basics every channel depends on, then put most of your money into the channel where your customers already are. That is usually one of three: social media, SEO or paid ads. This guide helps you choose, and gives a simple order to follow.
The three channels compared
| Social media | SEO | Paid ads | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it does | Builds awareness and trust with regular posts | Gets you found when people search Google | Puts your offer in front of people now |
| Speed | Slow to medium | Slowest, builds over months | Fastest |
| Ongoing cost | Time or a monthly fee | Time or a monthly fee | Ad spend plus management |
| Stops when you stop? | Reach drops | Keeps working for a while | Yes, immediately |
| Best for | Businesses that are visual or relationship-based | Businesses people search for | Offers, launches and promotions |
| Needs first | Good photos, a clear offer | A website or Google profile | A clear offer and a page or WhatsApp to land on |
Step 0: the basics (do these first)
Whichever channel you choose, set up these first. They cost little and make every other effort work better:
- A clear offer. What you sell, for whom, at what price.
- A way to contact you. WhatsApp, a form or a phone number that is answered.
- A Google Business Profile. Free, and the first thing many local customers see. See our 20-minute setup guide.
- A simple website or landing page. Even one page with your services, photos, reviews and contact details.
Choose by situation
You are a local service business (clinic, salon, tutor, repair, cleaning): start with the Google Business Profile and basic local SEO, then add a steady social presence. Add ads when you have capacity for more customers.
You sell products online or through Instagram: social media with good photos and short videos first, and ads once you know which products people want.
You are launching or running a promotion: ads can create quick attention, but make sure the offer and landing page are ready first.
You are a professional or consultant: trust matters most. Build a clear website, a Google profile and regular helpful posts on LinkedIn or Facebook.
Your customers do not search for what you offer: for new or unusual products, people do not know to search. Social media and ads create demand that SEO cannot capture yet.
A sensible order for most small businesses
- Month 1: the basics above.
- Months 1 to 3: one social platform, posted consistently, plus basic local SEO.
- When enquiries come in and you can handle more: test a small ad budget for your best offer.
- After 3 to 6 months: add content and SEO work, and review what actually brought enquiries.
This is our general advice and not a rule. Your business may be different.
How to decide with numbers
Ask where your last ten customers came from. If most said "I saw you on Instagram" or "someone recommended you" or "I found you on Google", that tells you where to start. Track enquiries by source from now on, even with a simple spreadsheet.
What not to do
- Spread a small budget thinly over all three
- Run ads to a page that is slow or unclear
- Expect SEO to work in weeks
- Judge social media by followers instead of enquiries
- Pay for anything that guarantees results

Frequently asked questions
Should a new business do SEO or ads first?
If you need customers quickly, ads give faster feedback. If customers search for what you do and you have time, SEO and a Google Business Profile build lasting visibility. Many businesses start with the free basics, then add ads.
Do I need all three?
Not at the start. Pick the one that best matches how your customers find businesses like yours, do it well, then add another.
What is the cheapest place to start?
A complete Google Business Profile and one well-run social platform cost the least. Both cost mainly time at first.
