How to get more Google reviews for your Singapore small business

How to ask for Google reviews the right way in Singapore: what Google allows, a QR code and link method, WhatsApp scripts, and how to reply to reviews.

To get more Google reviews, make it easy for real customers to leave an honest one, ask every customer at the right moment, and never offer anything in return. This guide shows you what Google allows, the quickest way to share your review link in Singapore, and WhatsApp messages you can copy.

Reviews matter because people read them before they choose a salon, a clinic or a tuition centre. A page full of recent, genuine reviews builds trust faster than any advertisement. This guide assumes you already have a Google Business Profile. If not, start with our Google Business Profile setup guide. Note that Google only lets certain kinds of businesses have a profile, so check that yours qualifies.

What Google allows and what it does not

Read Google's rules before you send a single request, because a mistake can cost you reviews you already have.

  • You may ask. Google's guidance says businesses can encourage customers to post reviews that reflect a genuine experience, as long as they do not offer incentives or try to influence the rating or the contents of the review.
  • You may not pay or reward. Google's content policy treats offering payment, discounts, free goods or free services in exchange for posting a review as fake and misleading. That also covers offering anything to change a review or to remove a negative one.
  • There are penalties. Under Google's policy violation page, a business that breaks the rules can lose the ability to receive new reviews for a period, have existing reviews unpublished for a period, or show a warning that fake reviews were removed.

So "leave us a 5-star review and get 10% off" is not allowed, even if a competitor does it. Skip it.

Google gives you tools to make this simple. Its help page on creating a link or QR code to request reviews explains how to create a link customers can tap or scan to go straight to your review box. In your Business Profile, look for the option to ask for reviews, copy the link, and download the QR code if it is offered. Menus change from time to time, so follow Google's page if yours looks different.

Save the link in a note on your phone. You will use it a lot.

Step 2: Ask at the right moment

The best time to ask is right after the customer has had a good moment with you: the haircut is done, the lesson went well, the cake was collected. Google's own tips page on getting more reviews encourages businesses to ask customers directly. Here are three Singapore-friendly ways:

  1. At the counter. Put a small sign with the QR code next to the payment terminal, with the words "Enjoyed your visit? Tell others on Google."
  2. On WhatsApp, after the job. Message the customer the same day, while it is fresh.
  3. On the receipt or the PayNow confirmation. Add one line and the short link.

Step 3: Copy these messages

Keep them short and polite. Replace the brackets.

After a visit or delivery (WhatsApp):

Hi [name], thanks for choosing [business] today! If you have a minute, an honest Google review really helps other customers find us: [link]. Thank you!

After a project or monthly plan:

Hi [name], it was a pleasure working with you. If you are happy with how it went, would you share your experience on Google? Here is the link: [link]. Honest feedback is welcome, good or bad.

A gentle reminder (send once, after about a week):

Hi [name], just a friendly reminder in case you missed my last message. No pressure at all. Thanks again for your support!

Two rules: send each request once, plus one reminder at most, and do not mention a discount, gift or anything else in return.

Step 4: Ask everyone, not only the happy ones

It is tempting to send the link only to customers you are sure are delighted. Google's policy warns against attempting to influence the rating, so the safest approach is to ask everyone who used your service, and take the result as it comes. Over time, honest reviews with a few critical ones look more believable than a wall of perfect scores.

Step 5: Reply to every review

Replying shows future customers that someone is listening. This is our own advice, not a Google rule:

  • Reply to good reviews within a few days. Thank the person by name and mention one detail from their review.
  • Reply to a critical review calmly. Thank them, apologise where it is fair, and offer to sort it out by WhatsApp. Do not argue in public, and do not offer anything in exchange for them changing the review, because Google's policy prohibits that.
  • Report fake or abusive reviews. If a review is spam or breaks Google's content rules, report it through your profile.

A simple weekly routine

  1. Monday: note how many customers you served last week.
  2. Send the review request to each of them, once.
  3. Friday: reply to new reviews.
  4. Once a month: count your new reviews and the average rating. Write it down.

Ten minutes a week is enough for a small shop or clinic. If a month passes with no new reviews, the problem is usually that nobody asked, not that nobody was happy.

What to avoid

  • Buying reviews or using review exchange groups. They break Google's rules and the risk is yours.
  • Reviews from family or staff. They are not honest customer experiences.
  • Pasting the same answer to every review. People notice.
  • Asking for reviews on a profile that does not match your real business details. Fix your name, address and hours first.

Where reviews fit in your marketing

Reviews are one part of being found on Google Maps. They work best with a complete profile, regular posts and a website that matches. Our on-page SEO checklist covers the website side, and our guide on where to spend first helps you decide what comes next.

Frequently asked questions

Can I give a discount in return for a Google review?

No. Google's Business Profile policy says offering incentives such as payment, discounts or free goods or services in exchange for posting, changing or removing a review is not allowed. Ask for honest reviews only.

Should I only ask customers I know are happy?

Ask everyone who has used your service. Google's policy warns against trying to influence the rating or the content of reviews, and asking only the happy ones is a way of doing that.

Can I delete a bad review?

Not yourself. You can reply politely, and you can report a review that breaks Google's policies, such as spam or fake content. A review you simply dislike stays.
